Volunteer Reading to Home
Every year, 1 in 5 children in the Netherlands leave primary school with a language deficiency. We want to try to reduce this figure with the Reading to Home project. We do this by reading to children aged 2 to 8 (with a language delay) once a week and by playing language games with them. Research has shown that both can play an important role in preventing and/or remedying a language delay.
What are you going to do?
As a language volunteer Reading to Home you come to a family (foreign and/or language poor) with children aged 2 to 8 years old once a week. You read aloud, play (language) games together and sing Dutch songs. You love to read and see it as a challenge to involve parents/guardians in the language development of their children.
The Reading at Home project spans 15 weeks. You spend about an hour per week on the reading itself and about an hour on the preparation. You visit the family 14 times and go to the library once with both the parents and children. You and the family agree on a fixed time during the week that you will visit them. Reading at Home starts in September and in February
Reading aloud volunteers are supervised by the reading aloud coordinator. For starting readers we organize an information meeting about interactive reading and we give tips on how to fulfill your role as a volunteer. Halfway through the project, there is a second meeting with all the readers in order to exchange experiences.
What we offer you
- A great volunteer position where you can contribute to a project of great social importance;
- A library card for readers (you can also use this to borrow materials for reading visits).
